With many new students arriving from Puerto Rico, my students will need extra support and supplies. My students have been affected by Hurricane Maria, some some students have lost their homes, family members and more. The students at my school come from a working class neighborhood that is very well integrated. They are every color of the rainbow and come from multiple backgrounds. One thing that they have in common is that many of their families are working multiple jobs and having trouble making ends meet.
Teachers, counselors, and other staff members frequently purchase basic need items for students who are not able to receive them from their families.
This school uses a program of catching students doing the right thing. There is an ongoing conversation about "being a bucket filler" by doing good things. They receive incentive "bucks" for good behavior and deeds.
My Project
I need new books for the students to read. A lot of the books on my shelves in my classroom are old and they have already read them. These are books and the students wanted to add to our classroom library.
With new books I’m hoping the students want to read more often.
When students read more it often helps improve all other subject areas. With new books I’m hoping my students read to improve improve their learning. The more you read the smarter you get.
