My second graders have learned to work cooperatively within our classroom community and be engaged in their own learning. They are excited to begin a new book or to begin writing a new story. They are learning to be excited about their education. Each day provides rich, new experiences.
Our school is home to a very diverse community of young students.
We are a Title I campus, meaning most of our population is from low socioeconomic households. Some of our students do not have books at home to read and beg me on a daily basis to borrow our classroom books because they are so eager to learn and start an adventure in a new book. Of course, I encourage these exploring young readers to read as much as possible. Having the necessary materials and furniture in my classroom is essential to continuing to create this academic growth in each of my students. Our school is a small but wonderfully close community of supportive teachers and students who help foster a true love of learning and educational curiosity.
My Project
I am requesting many different sets of leveled books. With the addition of more than 300 books, my students will be able to choose a book to read everyday in class. They will learn to not only read the print, but ask questions about what they are reading. Questions like why did the author have this character do this or say this? I will use the books to teach students to think critically about the text. Teaching students to think beyond the text will help them become strong in other areas of study. Most importantly, students will be able to check out and take these books home to help with reading stamina and fluency.
Many of our students were affected by Hurricane Harvey and lost their homes and possessions.
Being at school and learning have been the only constant in these children's lives. Children need access to hundreds of different books to keep them interested in learning and reading. The power of choice is huge for students at this age and with the books donors will be providing, our students will have choice!.
