My students need as wide of a variety of reading materials as possible. I have asked for 45 books. The reading program I have implemented requires as much diversity in reading material as possible!
It's very simple, kids need to READ. Of course implementation is not always so simple, but with your help my already decent sized classroom library will receive a much needed upgrade. We are using a program called Accelerated Reader to enable students to take control of their reading lives.
I teach in one of the most densely crowded urban areas in the country.
There are about 1300 students in a school built for 650. Our students are mostly on free lunch, well over 90 percent, and our resources have mostly dried up, as at many other schools around the country. While we do face obstacles, our population is nothing if not resilient and while no one enjoys doing more with less, that has essentially been our experience for the past few years.
Currently few of my students have a rich and rewarding independent reading life outside of school. They definitely have the time to develop their taste for literature, but what they lack is the guidance and the resources, which is where I come in! And you as well! By having students follow closely to the principles of building independent readers, by the end of this school year I will have raised the reading level by one year of at least 90 per cent of my students. They are allowed freedom in what to read, but they must read books that are "just right",which usually means slightly above their current reading level so that they can be challenged. The joy of losing yourself in a story is well known, not to mention the academic benefits of acquiring the habits of a good reader. All throughout their academic lives and for some throughout their careers they will have to read, analyze and understand reading material. The software holds them accountable and reading circles inspire them.
After spending a year with me, in a safe environment, where reading is a valued activity, students will begin to change.
They will become more thoughtful, as they begin to discuss what they are reading during class time. So many of my students are a year or two behind in their reading levels that by the time they get to high school many times it is too late for them to independently read a science textbook for example. When the new library and program are in place, I know I can make big changes.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
