Books!!! Book Baskets to Supplement a Medieval Language Arts/History Unit
My students need books to support our school's new reading and writing curriculum. Students may select from these recommended titles that support the content or themes. These will be used in small-group instruction or independent reading.
My students are bright, curious seventh-graders. They are witty, though sometimes silly, and genuinely love to learn. Students in my classroom enjoy engaging activities that keep them focused and completely involved in each lesson.
My students are readers, writers, thinkers, and leaders; they are smart, kind, thoughtful, and just downright awesome.
Because I incorporate a great deal of history in my language arts classroom, my students are always eager to know more about whatever we are reading about and studying. They are such a joy to teach and most certainly the reason I am a teacher.
My Project
My school began a new language arts curriculum this year (Wit & Wisdom). The first unit explores questions of identity in society by taking students on a literary expedition across a famously inflexible social setting: Medieval Europe.
Though it may seem distant, this medieval exploration illustrates the influence of societal forces on identity formation--an influence that remains undeniable in 7th graders' modern setting.
A big part of this curriculum involves independent reading of both novels and informational text that relates to the unit's focus. This project will help fund a basket of books for students to explore during this unit, including titles like Medieval Life, The Royal Kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay: Life in Medieval Africa, and 100 Facts Knights & Castles.
