Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students in Colorado Springs attend a Title I school and are enrolled in Journalism and U.S. History. Many of my students come from low-income, hardworking families, from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
They are intellectually curious, and eager to make connections between school curriculum and outside knowledge.
They light up when they are able to connect Social Studies with their interests and experiences! They are coming to learn that history is not just a list of dates, but real events that impact all that surrounds them today.
My Project
Many of my students have not yet come to realize how Social Studies and U.S. history directly relates to their lives every day. I remember when I was an 8th grader, I had not yet grasped the inextricable link between education and opportunity. This is especially true for those from low-income less resources backgrounds.
In contributing to this project, you will help my students access books that could ignite the spark that sets their life's path.
I know for me, that is what happened when my 8th grade Social studies teacher introduced me to books like "A Young People's History of the United States," "I am Malala," and "More than Gone."
Currently, my students do not have novels that can be built into their curriculum. Their other classes have also moved away from book-studies. In helping to create a classroom library, these students could wind up reading an exponential amount more books this year than they would have otherwise.
