I feel SO fortunate to teach this group of 7th graders. They are spirited, hardworking, and make my job so easy. At the beginning of the year, many told me that they did not identify as readers, but thanks to the generous donations of many people and groups, they were able to find books that they enjoyed, and have changed their tune! My students are ASKING for MORE books!
My students love reading books in which they can either learn something about themselves or learn about a culture or identity different than their own.
They have developed their own inside jokes about novels within their reading groups and come alive when discussing their books each week. For their choice novels, they created their own reading schedules, and got mad when they had to stop reading to stay on schedule. This hunger for learning is so magical to witness!
My Project
I am due with my first child at the end of March, and I want to make sure my 7th grade students have a stacked classroom library to keep them engaged in my absence. They are loving our current selections and have asked for more scary and mysterious titles.
Our wish list includes a variety of novels by a diverse selection of authors.
During my leave, lessons will run the same as they do while I am here. Our class is modeled around Kate Roberts' A Novel Approach. Students will read a novel as a class in order to learn and practice multiple reading strategies, and then apply those reading strategies to their choice novel.
While I am out students will learn how to recognize and analyze author's tone and mood, and then apply what they've learned while reading a novel of their choice. It will be exciting to see how well they do while I am out!
