I provide speech and language therapy for three to five-year-old children in an early childhood education center. My students often have risk factors and most are in a special education setting. I work with students that have developmental delays, selective mutism, autism, and speech and language delays.
My students work on functional communication, vocabulary, social skills, basic concepts, listening and following directions, and speech sound production to improve communication skills in the classroom and home environments.
The goal is to better prepare my students for kindergarten.
I like to support the classroom teachers' by focusing on the themed vocabulary of the classroom. Keeping my library up to date is essential for this. I also need to update my selection of fidget toys as most have been broken by the little hands that use them. New fidget and sensory toys are used as reinforcers to complete speech and language tasks or are given to the student when they need specific input to help them manage their day.
I strive to keep up on fun, engaging materials that support classroom teachings while shifting the focus to increasing functional communication.
These new books, coordinating manipulatives, and sensory toys will allow me to do just that!
