Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I school in southwest Denver with over 90% living in poverty. My students are special in so many ways! They all work hard to learn and grow even though they have learning, cognitive, speech, behavioral and physical disabilities. The majority of my students come from Spanish-speaking homes and are bilingual themselves. Others don't speak with words but sign or use communication devices. Some of them are reading and writing and others keep trying to learn their letters. Most of them are able to walk, while one of them needs a wheelchair to get around. All of them love to learn and interact with others in the community.
My Project
We have many great books at all different levels in both Spanish and English in our classroom, but we need help getting them organized. We have books by famous authors, specific genres and popular books like Fly Guy and Disney that need to be arranged for easier access. The Songmics Storage Cube closets and the Storex books bins will solve our problem.
Having books tubs and cubbies will put more books in the hands of my students with special needs!
Once we have the book tubs and storage cubes, we will create a system so students will be able to browse the books and find exactly what they are looking for. The books cubes will hold the book tubs filled with great books. The organizational system will be visual. Each book from one content area will have a specific sticker and then the cubby where it belongs will have the same sticker. When a student is looking for an animal book they will simply look for a tub with an animal sticker. These items will be used daily during literacy groups and independent reading time. This will make a difference in the students' learning because more time will be spent with books in the hands. With access to more books, all my kids will learn more. These organizational items will also allow for the students to be responsible for cleaning up the classroom library on their own!
