Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are up against incredible odds. The students I teach live in tough neighborhoods and face challenges like poverty, homelessness, and hunger on a daily basis. If history is to repeat itself, these students would have little little chance of attending college.
But I believe reading can change this.
If these students learn to read at grade level- and develop a love of reading- I know this will power them through elementary school, high school, and on to college. Love of reading needs to start in Kindergarten where students build this love by being able to choose high interest books that they feel capable of reading.
My Project
To meet this end, I am requesting a library cart with books on a variety of topics ranging from fantasy to non fiction. My students will be able to independently choose books at their emergent reading level that interest them.
Coupled with the more guided instruction that happens through our literacy program- students will build the skill necessary read and will have the materials to make them WANT to continue reading.
The college track starts in Kindergarten.
