Help me give my students books that they can see themselves in, books they can relate to, and books that inspire them to be the best version of themselves.
My students are the most incredible little humans I have ever had the privilege of meeting. When they step foot into my room they are scientists, mathematicians, readers, writers, authors, dreamers, visionaries and, above all, lifelong learners.
I currently work in a Title 1 school where almost 80% of the student body receives free and reduced lunch.
There are more than 40 countries represented in my K-5 school and the vast majority of my students are English Language Learners. These opportunities come with challenges, however; the diversity among my students allow for a deeper understanding of differences and an authentic way of fostering compassion and global awareness.
My Project
I strive to create a classroom where books are loved, cherished, and above all - read! I implore my students to choose books that inspire them to be the best version of themselves, books that change them for the better. I encourage them to be critical readers who constantly question, analyze, and discuss literature. I realized, as I watched my students build their identities as readers, that if I want a classroom full of critical readers, I need to create an environment that inspires them to be as such.
My students deserve books that they can connect their own identities and experiences to - books that allow them to discover the person they aspire to be.
I am requesting books that allow my students to see themselves as people who deserve and have the right to be written about. The phrase "books as mirrors, windows, and doors" lends itself to allowing my diverse group of learners to view their person and others in the literature they read every day. I want to inspire them to advocate for themselves and providing a print rich environment with books that show them just how powerful they can be is one avenue of furthering this advocacy. As my students continue to build their identities as readers, I endeavor to provide them with texts that will help support this journey.
