My students need culturally relevant texts to use in small reading groups. We need American Born Chinese, All American Boys and The Hate U Give.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is a incredibly diverse group of children who come from all over the world. Their backgrounds bring a unique set of experiences and add to the uniqueness of our classroom family!
We “make do” with what limited resources we are given in our classroom.
My students and their families are struggling to make ends meet at home and unfortunately cannot provide basic supplies for their student. Without donations, my students would go without some essential items in the classroom that guarantees a healthy and efficient learning environment.
My Project
Imagine reading books about middle class, male, white protagonist most of your schooling? Think about some of the classic titles you remember from your grade school years. How diverse were the texts you read? Were the protagonist serving as windows or mirrors? Could you see yourself in the book?
For many of my students, the novels they read in English class do not mirror them.
I want to provide students with choices of books to read in our Spring Literature unit that they can see themselves in. I believe the stories we read should be culturally relevant to our students in order to create deeper connections in learning and foster an inclusive classroom.
