Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I elementary school filled with energetic, ambitious, and brilliant students! My 1st grade class is among them. They are a loving group of students who practice respect for themselves, others, and our school every day.
They are hungry readers and devour each book they can get their hands on.
Though they love reading, books are competing with today's age of video games and apps at the push of a button. This is why it is important to keep the students engaged with new and exciting books to read at their leisure.
Our main goal at school is to prepare the students to be college and career ready. Through our cooperative learning, emphasis on literacy, and perseverance, we hope to achieve this goal with our little ones.
My Project
Currently, our classroom book collection consists of books I am able to find for cheap and books that have been donated to me from retired teachers. Also, our current classroom reading area consists of whatever space they can find around the room, and our book containers are dollar bins I have been able to purchase. Though my students have never complained about our book collection or our reading space, I know they deserve more variety and a dedicated reading space for independent reading.
I am looking to enrich my students' reading experience by creating an independent reading nook in the classroom with the bookshelf and must-have books from Scholastic.
