Students at my school come from diverse backgrounds. The demographic structure of my school is approximately forty-four percent Asian, thirty-eight percent Hispanic or Latino, nine percent Filipino, five percent White, one percent African American, and three percent other ethnicities including multiple. Approximately twenty-three percent of students are English learners and sixteen percent are students with disabilities. Students value each others ideas and appreciate differences. They are full of curiosity and motivation.
Students have opportunities to demonstrate critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication.
To this end, we strive to create lifelong learners. We do this by guiding each child to reach his/her full potential to compete in a global society. We do this with confidence, in a capable and compassionate manner, by providing challenging, cooperative, problem-based learning activities that enable students to apply their knowledge to real-life applications.
My Project
The start of this school year will go down in education history as students finally returned to in-person learning after 15 months of virtual learning. With over a year of distance learning, students had hit a roadblock in their reading. Now that students are back in the classroom, it's more important than ever to reintroduce the love of reading. With high-interest books in their hands, students will be actively engaged in reading during Reader’s Workshop. Students will develop increased stamina and volume during independent reading.
Reading opens students’ mind and imagination.
There is nothing better than having a good book in their hands. Sure, students can read online or through an app, but magic comes alive when students physically flip pages of an actual book. Students can capture their thinking on post-its to stick on pages in their book.
This project will provide students with high-interest books at their reading level. Students grow as readers when they have choices in their book selection. Research shows that there are many benefits to reading. First of all, student engagement increases. Therefore, the love of reading also increases because of student choice. As student engagement increases, so does their reading skills. Students also develop improved comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. The requested books are of high interest to students; which in turn, will motivate them to read, read, read as if books are treasures waiting to be discovered.
