My Project

My Middle School Reading Extensions students face many challenges. Their reading skills are below proficient, they haven't been exposed to much reading at home due to low-income situations, and many of them have not learned to read for pleasure. Most of the reading they have been exposed to is assigned through school classes. As a result, they often come to me at the beginning of the year with a negative mindset because reading is difficult. Fortunately, they get to hear me give book talks throughout the year and they get to enjoy the freedom of being able to read books of their choice as long as it is in their lexile level and as long as it is in the system for Reading Counts quizzes.

My five reading classes are currently in competitions for word count.

As long as they finish a book in their level and pass the Reading Counts quiz, their word count is added to their class total. The class with the highest word count at the end of each semester earns a party.

Unfortunately, my class library is limited due to my budget and our school library is small. I would love to add some high interest, lower level books to my library so that my students have more choices for their independent reading time. By donating to this worthwhile cause, you can help my students improve their reading skills as well develop more passion for reading.
