My students need a classroom sets of the books "Wonder" and "Out of My Mind". BOOKS ARE THE KEY TO OPENING OUR MINDS.
This project expired on August 10, 2018.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
My students are wonderful nine and ten year olds that strive to learn as much as possible. This year my room is an Inclusion Classroom -- the first inclusion class to be added to our school building. Two of the most important lessons being taught this year are inclusivity and diversity. All children want to feel that they are accepted by their peers.
Books are the center of learning, and through this project, students will be able to gain a better understanding of what it means to be inclusive.
In our ever-growing diverse population, what could be more important?
Our classroom is lacking class sets of core literature. I would like to use books such as "Wonder" and "Out of My Mind" as literature units to support these initiatives and to promote compassion and empathy.
These books will help with reading skills such as author's purpose, comprehension, inferencing, predicting, and supporting claims with evidence through the use of specific details from the passages.
More importantly however, these books will encourage classroom discussions concerning both inclusivity and diversity.
I will use these books in my inclusion classroom. The stories will be used as tools to help students relate to differences between each other. Both "Wonder" and "Out of My Mind" are stories will also help to facilitate discussions around compassion, empathy, and acceptance.
