I teach fifth grade in a public school on the outskirts of the Bay Area. My students come with a wide variety of backgrounds, languages, experiences, and abilities. They love to talk, laugh, dance, and support one another in their collaborative learning groups.
They are bursting with energy and are eager to learn and make new connections.
Every student in my classroom appreciates their ability to learn in a manner that will help them be successful learners. It is my hope that they all feel loved and valued.
I am hoping to build a classroom library with a variety of books that are both accessible and a reflection of the backgrounds of my students. Students need a variety of genres and topics to explore. Many of my books are decades old and is lacking current favorites. My project includes fiction, historical fiction, and graphic novels.
I hope to instill a room of avid readers through high-interest books and to keep them engaged readers through paired reads, literature circle groups, and independent reading time.
When my students become readers, they will not only make connections to the outside world, but they will lay the foundation for more rigorous texts in middle school and beyond.
