Twenty-four third graders, five different languages, one teacher and one classroom. My students are nothing short of amazing. Each comes from a rich culture that glorifies school. Each comes ready to learn and excited at the new things they will get to try. Each comes with a passion for a different hobby: some like art, some like math, some like playing. All love school.
Every day, they run up to me and say “I can’t wait to read today!” As a teacher, nothing can sound more beautiful than hearing kids express excitement over something so integral to learning.
In my classroom we glorify our reading time with pillows, witch reading finger pointers, and special chairs. Every time we finish our independent reading time, they immediately ask if we can continue for “just a little longer.” They sigh when I say it is time to move on! When I ask them to share their thoughts, their hands raise enthusiastically and one time a student responded: “I love to read, third grade is so fun.”
Never have I been so proud to be a teacher.
My Project
Think about your third grade classroom, your first grade classroom, your high school literature classroom. What do they all have in common? An abundance of books!! Books that allow students to leap from page to page, go on journeys that they never could have imagined. Could you have visited Hogwarts without a book? Could you have befriended Auggie without a book? Amazing experiences in the classroom begin with the correct books that students need to read in order to enhance their reading level.
With the proper leveled books, students will grow exponentially in their reading skills!
As a new teacher, my students and I need these books to build my library so that I can teach these scholars properly.
My classroom hosts students who read at 23 different lexile levels. We need these books in order to grow our brains and reach our full potential!
