Books are portable magic! Literature circles and student engagement.
My students need books that show them different points of view and take them to other places. Small group literature circles have been proven to increase reading comprehension.
My high schoolers all live in rural South Georgia. Many students have never been more than one or two counties over. They've never traveled beyond a 100 mile radius of a our small four stop light town.
Extra books that could expand their horizons are luxuries.
All of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch; not because their parents don't work hard, but because jobs are scarce in our community.
My students work hard in the classroom. They embrace each day with enthusiasm. They want to see and be part of a bigger world that we explore through literature.
My Project
Student engagement is increased when students have choices in what they read. Small-group literature circles with titles and content that appeals to my students is imperative.
Groups of two students who are accountable to each other and highly engaged in their reading will drive an improvement in reading ability and reading stamina.
These novels will help me provide novels that address the needs of my students while simultaneously provide them with characters with which they can truly connect. When so much is focused on the standardized test, it is my hope that this connection will create a group of life-long readers.
