My Students

I love my third graders! They are insightful, creative and fully determined to become strong scholars. One of their favorite things to do is to visit our classroom library and nestle into a cozy seat with a good book in their hands.

My classroom is full of students of different cultures and ethnicities.

This is part of what makes us so special! We all may not look the same or have the same experiences, but through the cultivation of a classroom community, we are a very tight knit group.

My Project

My goal is to ignite a passion within my students to help them become lifelong readers. This can be a difficult and daunting task. To ignite this passion, a student must find a book that they relate to and can get lost in. This magical book will look different for every student.

As a start, I am working on diversifying my classroom library to ensure that I have books that represent my students.

I want books that every student can relate to regardless of interests, gender and ethnicity. For example, many of these texts have a main character who is of color. This will be extremely important for my students to be able to envision themselves within these texts.

The best way for students to become lifelong readers is to find a book that hooks them in. This is why I have included a variety of picture books, chapter books, graphic novels and non-fiction texts. I want to get an enjoyable book into every one of my students' hands and this is a wonderful start!
