When I was a little girl, I remember having a variety of books in our classroom library. I enjoyed reading fictional stories with funny characters. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. As a classroom teacher, I want to provide my students the opportunity to read books of their interest.
I teach first graders in an area where English is their second language.
Many of my students do not have an English language rich environment when they leave school. Many of my students have few books at home. I allow them to check out classroom library books to share with their brothers and sisters. I provide my students opportunities to read a variety of books that students enjoy reading. Children love to read when they are offered a variety of children's literature. Reading will only build confidence and improve comprehension as well as fluency.
My Project
The fact is that most of my students are English Language Learners and have very few reading material at home. With an an array of genres in our classroom library students will be able to practice reading and learn through books from different cultures, themes and thematic units.
Providing a classroom rich in books will allow students to grow educationally, it would help them learn more about the world around them.
These books will instill in them the desire to read and learn.
