Ms. Bielecki from Holt MI is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Books are Brainfood

My students need texts that reflect them. We want to see their faces on the covers with characters white, brown, female, male. Our shelves should be diverse in genre & challenge our thinking.

My Students

Our classroom is full of open-minded global citizens who are motivated to make a positive impact on their world.

We are a diverse group in culture, race & socioeconomic status, with over half of our students receiving free and reduced lunch.

We are a part of a fifth and sixth grade building where students build a strong community within the walls of the school by having daily community meetings, sharing our hopes and our genius, practicing empathy, giving each other hope & showing respect and responsibility daily. As sixth graders, our students realize that they have a leadership role to uphold. We work to find our voice through reading various texts. We work to find our voices by writing and sharing our thoughts in written form & in conversation/discussion. Students are given choice in almost everything that we do so that they might feel ownership of their learning. They are empowered learners. Our students are the teachers. Their voices are changing the world.

My Project

Enhancing our library challenges our readers' curiosity, strengthens their imagination, & elevates their passion for books. Ensuring that each of our students' faces can be found represented by a character in our library feels like an obligation in 2017! Our inspired sixth graders are hungry to learn about the world around them and they view books as a window to the world. They seek adventure through their texts. Our students want to relate to and to be challenged by characters. Students want to learn from and experience emotion through the unanticipated plot lines or the thrilling suspense of a story. We have readers who are excited by various genres and our library leaves them wanting MORE!

Students collaborated to create this grant as they SEE A NEED as learners and they want to advocate for their education by utilizing their voices: "We need books with a good flavor for everybody!" Students advocate for the addition of new texts by suggesting, "We have a pretty big library, but some of our books are wearing out.

We'd like some new ones in more genres. Book teach us harder words. They teach us about new places & cultures. Books can take us on adventures."

The selection of books that accompanies this grant have been cultivated by students. We have non-fiction, graphic novels, poetry, realistic fiction and also several engaging fantasy series. Most importantly, this carefully created wish-list includes diverse texts with characters who have learning needs, developmental needs, and whose skin matches the skin of the students in the room! We cannot wait to add these texts to our library.
