I teach Academic Intervention Services to students in grades K-5. Our rural elementary school in upstate New York has a student population of 340 students. Students who are at risk of failing the New York State Assessments and students who are having difficulty academically are recommended to receive Academic Intervention Services.
My students come from diverse economic backgrounds, with a significant number of students who receive free or reduced-priced lunch.
Our school, similar to other schools across the country, has homeless students that are hungry for food and hungry for learning. Sometimes, homelessness just happens...a parent loses their job, a family member becomes ill and can't work. We have students throughout the year that find themselves and their families in this situation. Suddenly, they become homeless.
All of our students are eager to learn and love coming to school. Our students are independent, hard-working, and compassionate. Our school is much more than a building where learning takes place. For many of our students, our school is where they feel safe, where they obtain nourishment, and where they are loved.
My Project
Books are a basic part of any elementary classroom. Without appropriately leveled texts, students will not be able to learn how to read. My students need multiple leveled reading books to help them become strategic and successful readers. It is only when students read appropriately leveled texts, based on their reading level, that they will be able to make the necessary growth to be an independent and strategic reader.
My students need the books from the requested LLI Kindergarten (Take-Home Book Package) to practice reading on their level so that they can become reading rock stars!
The leveled guided reading books I have requested are Kindergarten take home books. After reading the same book in class with me, students will be able to take the book home to practice reading with their family. By taking these books home, my students will be learning how to read more fluently and they will learn how to use strategies that will help them decode unknown words based on visual information, syntax and meaning.
Your donation to this project will help my students to become reading rock stars!
