My students come from a diverse community in Queens, NY. They come from a huge variety of economic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. We have many ENL students who are new English-language speakers and learners. Over 80% of our students qualify for free and/or reduced-price lunch.
Our school works hand in hand with the community to ensure the highest quality education for ALL students who attend here.
We have a focus on service learning and global conservation, where the students and staff take part in fundraising and creating awareness about issues within the community and around the world. We make global partnerships and teach important citizenship values to our students through these worldwide connections.
My Project
This project is important to bridge the needs of my students as they loop up with me into 5th grade. We will be departmentalized, which means two classes will need to share these resources.
There is a large range of readers in my classroom and these book sets address the needs of them all, from those working hard to approach grade level to those who are accelerated readers looking for a new challenge.
These book sets include a variety of classic literature, high interest reads, and nonfiction texts. My hope is to continue to the love of reading I began with this group last school year and I think these books will do just that!
