My students need new, exciting books to pique interest in reading. By having copies of new releases, they'll be able to continue series that they've started. This will help develop an appreciation for reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school in Arkansas. 77% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches. Many of our students participate in the "second change breakfast" initiative where we give students breakfast to eat during their second period classes, for free.
My students are all freshman in our junior high school.
My students come to class every day full of life and ready to take on any challenges that I throw at them. They make me laugh more than any other people who I've had the honor of knowing. They want to learn and care about the education that they receive while at school. For many of them, school is a safe haven where they know they are cared about and loved. I believe these kids deserve the best so they can become the best possible versions of themselves that they can be.
My Project
I chose new, relevant books that I believe will pique the interest of my students. Several of my students have started series but have not been able to finish them because the don't have access to the newer books in the series that have come out. I want to encourage them to continue reading. This will help them develop an appreciation for reading that will last a lifetime!
Reading fiction encourages student creativity, empathy, and independent thinking.
When students have access to current, relevant, new reading material, they are more willing to read and participate in independent reading projects outside of class.
