My students are AMAZING! I teach 3rd and 4th grade math and science in Chicago, and my students are some of the most energetic and enthusiastic learners there are! We are really hard workers and dedicated to our learning. My students are from a neighborhood in Chicago where most are living in economically challenging situations, yet they strive to overcome these challenges by maintaining positive attitudes and seeking out opportunities for growth and self-improvement. We are a "Leader in Me" school, so all of my students understand that they have to give their very best every day and are leaders in their daily lives. Many of my students are also English language learners which can be a challenge, but they do not let this stop them from learning. Our school community and neighborhood are very supportive and nurturing and each member contributes to our learning in some way.
My students need various math books and manipulatives like magnetic coins/bills/base ten pieces and kits for measurement, estimating, geometry. They will use these books and manipulatives in and outside of the classroom to engage in STEM projects collaboratively. They will be able to use books and manipulatives to design and solve problems.
They will also use the texts and manipulatives in collaborative learning groups.
This will help them to better understand math topics being covered as well as build an understanding of where they have a need to grow. Students will engage in metacognition and think about what they know and understand about topics using these materials as well.
