Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third-grade teacher in the Bronx with a classroom full of nine-year-olds eager to become better readers. They are dying to read about Harry Potter and Junie B Jones, dive into the Arthur chapter books, and enter the mixed-up world of Lemony Snicket, but their first- and early-second-grade reading levels are preventing them from doing so. Instead, the books they can read are usually simple stories targeted toward younger children that don't catch my third graders' attention.
My students would dramatically advance their reading levels and be able to enjoy age-appropriate literature if they were able to read along with adults. Unfortunately, many of my students' parents work late or speak only Spanish and are unable to spend that time reading with their children.
I am asking for sets of books with their recorded CDs to give my kids that precious read-aloud experience. I want to be able to send a high-interest book and its recording home with a child so that he or she can read along with the recording, improve his or her own reading level, and become more excited about reading. Please help make REAL third grade books accessible to these deserving kids and open new worlds of reading!
