My Students

Being a black kid isn't easy in Milwaukee. The statistics reflect high unemployment, high incarceration, high eviction and high homicide rates all affecting the lives of students in the Milwaukee Public Schools. In spite of this, my kids show up to school hungry for relationships and knowledge.

My students are creative and resilient, and they deserve the chance to showcase these skills in the English classroom.

However, in an urban public high school, resources are always tight and my kids often go without the things they need to learn and grow.

My Project

My students have been invited into a partnership with the Wilson Center for the Arts. They will attend a play based on the book, "Darius & Twig" by Walter Dean Myers and create a mural about the themes of the book with a visiting artist. Aside from these community opportunities, the book also provides a mirror in which students can reflect upon the choices present in their own lives.

In order to prepare ourselves for these exciting opportunities, though, we need access to the book.

Your donations will make it possible for my students to read the book before contrasting it with the play and representing it in visual form in a mural.
