Being a kid isn't easy. There's schoolwork, friends, parents, you name it. With all of the pressure that is placed on you, sometimes life can be difficult to navigate. That's where my favorite fruit comes in.
"Be like a pineapple: Stand tall, wear a crown, and be sweet on the inside." This saying hangs in a predominant location in my classroom and serves as our class motto.
It's important to believe in yourself. No matter what life throws at you, working hard will help you succeed. My students are learning that during their first year as "middle schoolers" in our kindergarten through eighth grade school district. Upon entering fifth grade, they are responsible for managing lockers, arriving to classes on time, working with several teachers instead of just one, and staying organized. It can be quite a challenge!
Despite this, the children at our school rise to the occasion. In fact, it's not uncommon to hear them say how much they love switching classes and having a bit of extra freedom. Still, there are times when a high five, big hug, or words of compassion mean more than anything. My classroom is a safe environment where every person is valued.
These books will help my students expand their interest in reading because they relate to popular movies. A Wrinkle in Time is a classic, but many of my students have not had the opportunity to learn of this story. Now that it is a feature film, I want them to experience the original tale. Similarly, the movie, Coco, has helped our students learn about Dia de los Muertos during a recent cross-curricular project. These books will continue that interest in multi-cultural learning.
As I always say, the books are usually better than the movies, so let's get them in the hands of my students!
