This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students in our school range from first grade to eighth grade. I work with students in third, fourth, fifth and seventh grades. Academically, many of them are reading close to grade level but are not quite there yet. They really need an extra push to move forward in their academic goals.
The students in my class are involved in a wonderful reading program that promotes independent reading.
The students move through several stations which include directly working with me, reading books of their own choosing, and practicing individual skills on the computer. Additional books for our Reading Library would allow for more variety.
My Project
Independent Reading is an integral part of our reading program. The students spend 15 to 20 minutes everyday reading at their own independent level. They love to choose books to read and choice promotes motivation. The students are motivated because they have ownership of the books they read.
One problem that we face is there are a limited number of books that come with the program.
I would like to provide my students with additional books so that they have more options to consider when selecting a new book. There are also new books that have been published within the last few years and my students always ask if they can read them. I would love to have copies of the newer titles to include in our library as well.
