This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Imagine excited and dedicated students preparing for competition, only they aren't running drills or reviewing plays. They are quizzing each other and taking notes from books. They are members of our reading bowl team, preparing for the Helen Ruffin Reading Quiz Bowl, a state-wide competition.
The students on our reading bowl team are dedicated users of the library and have a passion for reading.
They enjoy discussing books and sharing their favorite authors. Members are chosen from a middle school of 769 children, including 583 Blacks, 126 Hispanics, 23 Asians, 16 Multi-racial, and 15 Caucasians. Our Special Education program includes 120 students and 25 students whose first language is not English. The families in our community have an average income of less than $50,000. Our school is a Title I school, with over 95% of our students qualifying for free meals.
My Project
The students on our reading bowl team love literature and are just as dedicated as any athlete preparing for competition. They read and take notes on the GA Book Award nominees in preparation for the county, regional and state competitions. Before and after school they quiz each other and practice with buzzers used in the event. The students learn to take notes, study for detail, work as a team and improve their reading and public speaking skills. They prepare book talks for the 20 titles and present them on our morning news, getting the whole school excited about books, the quiz bowl competition and voting for the GA Book Awards. After the reading bowl, the books are added to our library collection and our team is recognized on the morning announcements.
This project will support our students' love of reading and give them an avenue for sharing that passion with others.
The competition helps build their confidence and promotes the importance of literacy to our school and community.
