I am so blessed to work on an incredibly diverse campus. My students come from all walks of life and each of them offers something unique and wonderful to our school community. Over half of my students reside in low-income situations. Our campus houses the school for the Hearing Impaired. We are also one of many bilingual schools in our school district. With that being said, we are so fortunate to have opportunities to celebrate a wealth of languages, cultures, similarities, and differences that make us the great campus that we are.
As the campus librarian, I take every opportunity I can to share great literature with my students and embed STEAM activities into my library program.
In my seven-year tenure at my school, I have seen my students' love of reading grow immensely. I am constantly seeking new ideas to keep this passion alive.
My Project
Studies show that hands-on learning is one of the keys to engaging students. Building with LEGOS can teach kids critical thinking skills without them even realizing they are learning. Building with LEGOS can spark creativity, develop critical thinking skills, and explore basic STEAM concepts, plus its just a lot of fun!
Following instructional books and manuals to assemble LEGOS provide children with opportunities to read, problem solving, think creatively, focus their attention to detail and explore ideas related to symmetry, balance, shape and size.
If funded, this project will allow me to provide my students with a special space in my library to read, explore, create, problem solve and design. Growing my library into a wonderful 21st century space filled with a variety of print and STEAM resources is my ultimate goal.
