Help me give my students a good environment that contains books at their level as well as in their interest range. Snacks also increase my students' learning levels.
I have a mixed group of learners that range anywhere from 2 through 5th grade. Each of my students have their own special skill sets, and their own personal way of being successful and learning within the classroom environment. Most of my students come from the Tlingit Alaska Native culture and are caring, empathetic people. They care very much about their education and having fun while they learn.
This year, we are focusing on self-help skills, as well as identifying individual educational, and emotional skill sets.
We would like to be able to learn about these things while working at our own individual level while having fun.
Our community is located in the heart of Southeast Alaska in a small town named Hoonah. While we work in the classroom, we have become more of a family. We have known each other for several years and grown up with each other while facing all the factors that play a role in a small town of Alaska.
My Project
My fourth grade students come from a very tight-knit community. Our community is more of a large family. We are from a small native village in Southeast Alaska. It is very hard for us in bush Alaska to be able to find the resources that are needed to keep our students engaged and learning every day. The prices here are also a large problem. The cost is high, and the take home is low. A lot of the teachers throughout our district spend personal money to be able to provide their students with proper learning materials.
Students are our next generation, the people that we will rely on to carry out our legacies.
Let's give them what they need now to be successful later. Reading is so important, as well as making sure that their basic needs are met so that they are able to reach academic success. Sometimes all they need it to know that they are safe, that there are people there that have their best interest at heart, and a little snack. Some of my kids only receive food within the district, as the food cost is high, and sometimes not even shipped in our town for long periods of time. I would like to be able to meet Maslow's needs within every one of my students so that I can build those relationships, and teach them to the best of my ability.
