My students need on-grade-level books and CDs to go with their read-along center.

Listening to a story is one of the best ways to learn what good, fluent reading sounds like even more so if you can follow along in your own copy of the book! Our school has listening centers available, but many of the books are too challenging and even intimidating for my first grade class.
Our school is an all girls public charter school.
My students have dreams of going to college and becoming doctors, lawyers, teachers, writers, and even astronauts. They are passionate about growing their brains and they love reading. Even my students just beginning to read love discussing the stories they hear each day in read aloud and the picture books they flip through in their spare time. In first grade this year, we are focusing on reading accurately (reading the correct word) and reading fluently (reading with proper speed, expression, and attention to punctuation). Many of our families work long hours and multiple shifts; students have limited time to read with their parents and to be read to. These girls have endless ambition, creative questions, and a fierce love of learning, but limited exposure to literature.
I am requesting two sets of five different first grade books and their accompanying CDs for use at our read-along center. This will include one copy of the text for each girl in a small reading group, as well as two copies of each CD, which girls will listen to via headphones as they follow along in their books. Read-alongs help students with their reading by modeling appropriate fluency, reinforcing site words, and aiding reading comprehension and understanding of the story. Each of the 5 stories can be used by several small groups across several days. All five stories are classic works of children's literature that will make students excited and passionate about reading. These read-along kits will build students' reading confidence and help them become more fluent readers!
The read-along listening centers are a valuable resource that my school has available, but without books and CDs on my students' reading levels, they are ineffective.
This project will provide our classroom with the materials needed to take advantage of our school's resources, and it will provide my students with continued exposure to excellent books being read fluently.
