My students are 1st grade students who I personally think are some of the best in the business. They are curious, willing, happy little beings. My students are from low income neighborhoods, but you wouldn't know that by looking at them. They are some of the happiest people you will meet. They want to learn and are eager to please.
My first graders are some of my favorite people in the world.
They are the funniest people and so fun to be around. Anybody would be lucky to spend a day with them, and I am lucky enough to spend 180 days a year with them.
I have done my best to research multicultural books that will inspire my students to fall in love with reading, while also falling in love with characters who look like themselves. I find that when 6 and 7 year olds relate to a character in the story, they are more likely to remember and internalize that story. The students in my class want characters that look like them, even though they don't articulate that just yet.
Books with strong characters who look and act like my students is the whole point of this project.
But, I also want them to be able to create art with materials that match their own skin tones. I think it is important to have paper, markers and crayons with colors that match their own skin color. When we do art projects it is vital that students are able to draw humans the way they view humans....all different colors. Currently, most of my students use their "yellow-orange" crayon to color skin, but it definitely doesn't match most of their own skin tones.
