Books About Urban Youth for Urban Youth

My students need and want books that are of high interest to them. My students read below grade level and need books that they can relate to in order to engage interest.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Most of my students read far below grade level and need motivated to read. Research shows that if they can relate to the book they are more apt to read it. We utilize the Star Independent Reading program to improve reading levels. We need books they can relate to so they want to and enjoy reading

My students are characters.

Most are from very low income homes. Some do not have homes at all. These kids deal with more in a day than you and I in a lifetime. But, my kids have grit. They want to learn and they want to do better for themselves. With the right motivation and support many of my students can and will be college bound. My students want to break the cycle.

My Project

We utilize the Star Reading Program. This program is an independent and individualized reading program. Students are tested four times to see what reading level they start on and what reading level they finish the year at. They read books and take quizzes to earn points. Since starting this program we have seen more than a years growth in many of our students. We need more books. Some of my avid readers have flown through the books I have and they are hungry to read more.

Have you ever seen someone read a book and love it for the first time?

I have and it's amazing. Reading changes lives. It improves quality of life and education. My students need more books to engage them. They need books they can relate to. We read a book this year called about a boy who had the same issue my students face. He overcame them in the book and it gave many of my students hope for their own lives. This library could spark interest in continuous reading and make lifelong readers.
