I have an upcoming group of 7th graders who are eager to learn about the world around them and how it came to be. My class focuses on the previous 500 years of history spanning from the Renaissance to the Global Age or present age.
My history class focuses primarily on historical skills, one of which is to understand historical figures and developments through literature.
Table Rock Middle School is focused on developing young readers and students who can analyze a written text and students who are able to read to learn as opposed to learning to read.
In addition to the primary source documents, cause and effect, compare and contrast, and map skills my students will develop, they will also need to develop a larger vocabulary and ability to read and learn from what they are reading. As you can see, my book shelf is very small and filled with books that either do not pertain to my curriculum but are long and boring. These books will spruce up my classroom library and inspire learning skills in my brand new students.
My Project
Students typically do not find reading interesting, and they also don't typically find history too fascinating. I've found that these books are a hit for young readers and it pulls the readers into the story. These stories will help bring the past to life for my students and will at the same time better their reading skills and build their vocabulary.
Students need to have more historical options of books to choose from.
I don't have a large selection of books in my classroom as I am still in the beginning sages of my teaching career. These books would be a big help for my students to have more options in their reading time during my class and at the mandatory end of day reading time.
