Books About Myanmar

My students need books about Myanmar to help support our Burmese students and allow all children to learn about one another's culture.

My Students

Located in our nation's capital, my Title I school serves the needs of a diverse community of students and families, particularly English language learners. In my current classroom, at least 6 different languages are spoken among all of my students, each of them equally beautiful and complex.

At the beginning of my year, it is difficult for my students to speak with one another because of the obvious language barriers but as a family, we develop a sense of vulnerability and safety, and together we learn to make mistakes and trust one another.

Through this process, I see my students begin to develop friendships, despite their inability to fully communicate through words. This is one of the most humbling, profound experiences to witness, and it cannot fairly be described by the limitations of my own language.

I am proud to serve my students and will continue to work with my families to improve the well being of all people in fair, respectful ways.

My Project

My students are from nations all across the world. This year, I have a large number of students whose families come from Myanmar. We have been very focused on studying and exploring the cultures and histories of the countries where my students and families are from. I want my students to understand the richness and value in being proud of their heritage.

I want to encourage cross cultural exchanges by bringing in relevant, bilingual English and Burmese texts for all students to access.

The books I am requesting range from fiction texts about Burmese folktales, nonfiction texts that explore the history and culture of Myanmar, as well as simple picture books that allow for easy translation between English and Burmese.
