This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am the librarian of a K-5 urban elementary school. My students are economically disadvantaged and many are English Language Learners (ELL). For this project my focus is on the kindergarten and first grade students.
During our library lessons, a constant refrain from my children is, "I can't see the pictures." The standard sized picture books are difficult for students to see. I often circulate through the class with the book so that they can see the pictures, however, as they are younger students they are not able to sit quietly while their neighbors get a turn to see the pictures. The few picture big books we have are most often on loan to the classroom teachers. I am a librarian who teaches every class in the school and through our storytime I try to support the information skills curriculum as well as the individual grade level curriculum while promoting a love of reading. Both the pictures and text are a vital part of the lessons I teach. In order for the students to be successful, seeing each of them is absolutely essential.
Having big books of several of the stories I teach, will allow me to spend more of my time instructing the students in literacy skills and creating an enthusiasm for literature. The stories I chose are both classics and children's favorites. The students will be able to view the entire story from any position during story time.
Your help will ensure that each of my students has one of the best seats in the house to view the books I share. You will make it possible for my students to have more interaction with the text and pictures and allow me more time for instruction.
