Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a bustling place filled with enthusiastic, intelligent elementary students eager to learn. When the students enter my classroom each week I always hear questions about what they'll be learning that day, exclamations about how much they loved the books they read the prior week and hopeful voices volunteering to help organize the books on our bookshelves. They love trying new things and our teachers love seeking new ways to make learning exciting!
When you walk into our school you find yourself immersed in an overwhelmingly positive atmosphere which evokes feelings of home.
Friendliness and warmth fill our halls and our young students cannot wait to embark on new learning adventures each day!
My Project
Life is very busy for most of our students and parents. It is hard to find time to work on literacy at home in a fun way between the bustle of extracurricular activities, homework and family responsibilities. Our program, Bookflix, entails creating bundles of books alongside their respective film adaptations and inviting our students to borrow them from the school library. These will include popular, thought-provoking stories such as Wonder, Where the Wild Things Are, Matilda, Beezus and Ramona and Because of Winn-Dixie.
This project will allow parents to spend time reading with their children and then create a fun bonding experience as they watch the movie together after finishing the book.
In addition to the books and DVDs, we will also include discussion questions with each Bookflix bundle. We will encourage our parents to discuss the questions with their children as they read and then hold a Family Movie Night to celebrate finishing the book together. We can't wait to see our families enjoy Bookflix once our Donor's Choose project is successful!
