Do you remember the first time you were abducted by aliens, fell through a strange door to another world, and fought the magical forces of evil to restore peace? I want my students to have these experiences and more!
With 1800+ students this year, my school is one of the biggest elementary schools in my city!
The school library serves all students from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Most of our students are either Hispanic or Asian, and over 60% are English Language Learners. My students love reading good books, and ask for them daily. I do my best to fulfill every request, but in a school so big the good library books are often already checked out. For many students, the school library is their only source for recreational reading material. As it is, the ratio of books to students in the library is so low that students can only check out one book per visit - a sad situation when students only get to visit the library once every two weeks at best, and once a month at worst.
I am requesting a variety of science fiction and fantasy books for students in grades 3-5. These books are both classics and newly published and range from War of the Worlds to Lord of the Rings, with many stops in-between - aliens, magical worlds, dystopian futures, time travel, and more. These books will capture my students' imagination, inspiring them to read for the fun of it (and also sneaking in some secret academic improvement).
These books, while not large in number, will have a big impact on the students at this school.
With budgets being cut across the board, it is unlikely that they will see any new books in the library this year. Help my students have something to look forward to - whether it is traveling to magical worlds, through time, or to the moon!
