This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a special education inclusion classroom at a Head Start center in Texas. 100% of students at my campus are considered economically disadvantaged. We have a high need for social/emotional learning and a district wide focus on literacy. The tubs will be used in each of our 15 classrooms and in the school library. Students can read in them or focus on self regulation techniques to calm themselves. Teachers can check out the ones in the library if they would like more in their classroom book area or safe place.

My Project

The book bins will provide a personal space for students to read or practice self regulation techniques. Our campus has a large focus on literacy and we include social/emotional learning in our curriculum for our young learners. Each teacher will have an opportunity to have a bin in their classroom and 5 will be in the school library. These 5 will be used in the library or available for checkout if teachers want more in their classroom. I have seen this idea flourish at other campuses and can't wait to bring the idea to my school! This is something that appeals to all learning styles and will help our students in early literacy and social/emotional learning.
