Our school district is located in rural Southwest Wisconsin and encompasses about 300 students, PK-12, with an economically disadvantaged rate of about 55%. About half of my student population, which is about 130, fall into this category. Though breathtaking geographically, this area struggles economically, as seemingly simple resources such as internet access is not available to all students.
My students are curious, determined, and always ready to learn about the world around them, but many need help gaining access to simple resources.
Many come from families that silently struggle, and they deserve to have access to simple and safe resources to help them learn in an environment they feel comfortable in. It is my duty and honor to ensure that every one of my students succeeds in their learning in the best way they can.
My Project
The books that I am requesting, Native People of Wisconsin, will be used primarily in my 8th grade Civics class. This year, I surveyed my 8th grade students on which topics they would have liked to learn most about--a good portion of them said they wanted to learn about the native peoples of our state! This is a requirement that teachers must hit upon in the state of Wisconsin, but I feel having adequate resources to teach this subject not only benefits my students but also serves justice to the native peoples of our state.
By donating to this cause, you will not only help to fuel my students' interests, but also allow them a deeper look inside a world they might not otherwise explore.
I am passionate about Native American studies and have sparked many curiosities in my students because of this. Having a tangible resource that is on-level, easily accessible (as many of my students struggle with internet access outside the classroom), and fits the needs of many of my students' different learning levels, will ensure that their peaked curiosities have been met. Though I intend to use the books mostly in my 8th grade class, I would also plan to use them in my high school classes as well, as supplemental information. This book is one of my personal favorites for information about the native peoples of Wisconsin, and I would love the opportunity to share it with my students!
It would not be possible without your contribution. Thank you!
