Help me give my students an opportunity to read high-interest books that value who they are and that empower them to speak up in a world that needs their perspective.
Today's middle schoolers are resilient. They are curious. They are leaders. Perhaps most importantly, they are eager to become active participants in a world that is literally on fire. 13-year-olds are passionate about equality, and they deserve to read texts that empower and inspire advocacy.
My Project
This project will provide my brilliant 8th grade students with texts recommended by Project LIT - a grassroots literacy movement that seeks to give students positive literacy experiences. This project will fund 4 texts that will serve as the choices for student-centered book talks. The books include: Patina, Blended, The Crossover, and A Good Kind of Trouble.
The purpose of this project is to include diverse texts in our classroom that celebrate the voices of individuals who often feel unseen, unheard, unaffirmed and undervalued.
In our classroom, we value kindness, empathy and open-mindedness. We talk about injustices in our community and our world. Giving students access to Project LIT books will provide more opportunities for relevant, rigorous and necessary learning.
Omaha Public Schools is currently operating in a hybrid model due to Covid-19, and students have been working almost exclusively on screens. They have expressed the desire to get their eyes back on real books, and for more opportunities to collaborate with one another. This project would enable students to have a break from technology, and give them a safe space to have meaningful conversations about meaningful topics with their peers.
This project allows for student choice, and amplifies student voice. Our young people have ideas for how to make this world a better place; they need opportunities to foster those thoughts and ideas. This project does all of these things, and my students and I are grateful for your support in advance.
