My students live in one of the largest cities in the world and attend an IB school. The student population includes ELL, diverse, low income and physically challenged students. IB is more than its educational programs and certificates. My students analyze and write about literature and their own lives with an emphasis on humanity and global citizenry within the context of the written word, student centered learning and collaboration.
At my heart I am motivated by a mission to open up new worlds for my students through literacy education.
My classroom is a place of illumination and discovery. Students spend the year immersed in classic literature drawn from a variety of genres and cultures. As they read and write, they reflect on their own experiences and character. Through analysis of literature, students move on to high school with a deep knowledge of literature as an art.
They take pride in their efforts and are willing to challenge their minds for the sake of learning.
My Project
I want to exposed my students to as many different books in the graphic novel genre as possible, and I want to do this through a spin on speed-dating called "Speed-Book-Dating". Students will move from book to book and record their interest-level.
In-School Independent Reading has been proven to be the very best way to create life-long readers and increase test-scores.
I want my students to apply their knowledge of literary terms and analysis to books they choose and love. Carving out a time during each period to read books of their own choosing is critical, and my students love graphic novels!
