I teach full-day Kindergarten in an Oklahoma school that values learning through the multiple intelligences. The students in my classroom come from a variety of social, academic, and economic backgrounds. In spite of our differences, we are building a classroom community that embraces each member as we grow and develop. It is important to me that children leave with a community that values their own growth and learning, while understanding that we are all better when we learn firsthand from others and their experiences as they impact our own.
At the beginning of a school year, the focus of building our classroom community is through literature and understanding our similarities as we begin to explore how we are also different. We will listen to Same, Same, Different and Be Who You Are as we create our self portraits.
We have to learn who we are in order to value others around us!
These books and art materials will help us explore our commonalities as we learn to appreciate our unique individualities. The multicultural markers and crayons will provide us with diverse options when we are working throughout the year. The charcoals and paper will help us create self portraits at various points in the year to not only grow together as a classroom community but help us realize how we have grown as learners too!
