A typical day in my classroom includes an hour and a half of language arts. We have a mini-lesson with time to practice a new concept, and then I meet with small groups of leveled readers. This is a great time to read, share, and get to know my students' interests and abilities.
My students come from diverse cultures.
They are in a dual-immersion program so half of the day they are with me for language arts, math, and science. The other half of the day they attend another classroom that is taught in Spanish.
My students are incredibly bright and challenged. They love to read and have learned to communicate in two languages. If they are good readers in English, they tend to be good readers in Spanish. They love to read and always beg for more time to read independently. My goal is to provide as much reading material as I can with the idea of exposing them to some of the best authors. They often come to me with requests for specific books that they are interested in.
My school starts students in the dual-immersion program in first grade. I teach the 5th and 6th grade students. It is amazing how well they can speak, read, and write in Spanish.
My Project
My students need small sets of leveled books that can be used in small reading group instruction and will provide varied reading choices for students. With the additional book sets, I will be able to use books that are at the students' reading level. Students in these small reading groups are at similar reading levels, so I can challenge them and know they are capable of rising to that expectation. They can share in a small group setting, read passages without feeling uncomfortable, and have the opportunity to ask questions, make predictions, and increase their vocabulary. In small reading groups, I can teach specific skills that are needed for those students.
Donations to this project will allow students in my classroom to have the opportunity to read a variety of books specific to their reading ability.
Reading good books will increase vocabulary, stretch imaginations, and encourage students to learn to love reading. These additional book sets will give them more exposure to great books and great authors.
