Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to school every day despite heavy challenges at home and in their neighborhood. Many of them lack a support system and push themselves to come to school and learn. They make sure they show up. Once they come to school, they know that the doors are open for them to learn and grow.
I admire the strength within them that they do not even know they have.
Together, the students come together and learn how to work together through diversity and adversity.
My Project
Once our class dives into one book, they fall in love with the author and the characters! And they will keep asking for more books from that series like Dr. Seuss, Pete the Cat, Diary of the Wimpy Kid, and non-fiction books about Animals and Science. Unfortunately, we do not have many book series or author sets in our classroom library. The students often wait weeks or months until they can read the book they want. Having these book series and author sets will give our class the chance to read many different book titles by the same author!
This means the students will be able to read books by the same author without being on a waiting list!
It will also build the student's reading capacity and hook them onto reading. The number one way to get students reading is by having books that they are interested in. I am also hoping for students to create book clubs where they can share what they read, connect, and relate the different storylines from the same author.
