Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are the best! They are bright, compassionate, intrepid, reflective, hardworking young people who have great aspirations! Our school is located in the South Bronx. The neighborhood struggles with extreme poverty, violence, and being woefully under-served by public services. Students and their families cannot usually afford to buy books.
Students in our learning community tremendously value books.
They take care of books and share them as if they are treasures!
The students in our classes are avid readers and writers. However, they need new books to keep their reading lives growing. Students have specifically requested the books in this grant and they are accessible for their diverse reading levels and also in terms of cultural content. Our students will greatly enjoy these books and learn from them. Book worms need great books!
My Project
New books are the lifeblood of the great literacy journey of life! Without fresh new books to keep students engaged and endeavoring on the path to greater knowledge, skill, and insight it becomes difficult. Great readers need books to keep them going. Being in the South Bronx makes this a challenge of course. We are working on multiple projects including poetry book clubs which is why some of the main requests in the grant are by a poet that goes by R.H. Sin who has had bestsellers recently that our high school students are deeply interested in. The Hadley School for the Improbably Gifted is another request for book clubs. Students appreciate book clubs because they get to go on the great intellectual journey together and go to the harder places that great books can take us to. Students will read and discuss ideas of theme, plot, author's craft, setting, symbolism, literary devices, and connections to contemporary society and issues. These discussions will be rich and powerful but are in need of one extremely important ingredient... books! We are also requesting two parts of popular manga series to help our more developing readers stay focused, engaged, and building their repertoires! Thank you in advance for your support.
