This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach Senior Literature. I have roughly 120 students. We are located on the south side, and unfortunately, very few students read on their own. They enjoy stories, and this donation is an example of a story that students will be able to enjoy and apply.
My students love to find out about the country they live in.
We live 2 miles from Lake Michigan, but barely any students have even gone there. This donation will allow students to imagine all the places in the country from the classroom. My school is a small charter school of 500 students. We have very limited funds, new books like these are very hard to get and rare when we do. My students know this, and they see the aging books.
My Project
My students need 34 copies of the book On the Road. The book I am requesting will be used in a contemporary literature unit to teach the beatnik era of the United States. It will be paired with James Baldwin and the diversity of the 50's and 60's. We will be reading from this book for a 4-5 week unit on the topic. I would like to have enough copies for students to be able to borrow and read at home, instead of simply in the classroom.
My students have been limited in their novel choices.
We reuse novels from 5-10 years ago. My goal is to create a new curriculum at the Senior level. Then, work my way down through the grades. I have a large independent library in my classroom, but need class sets of books to promote reading as well.
