We at P.S. 236 in Brooklyn are a mid-sized elementary school, made up of approximately 70% local children and 30% children from other neighborhoods in Brooklyn. We also have 8% of our population coming from homeless shelters and temporary housing. We receive no additional monies from Title 1 funding, nor do we benefit from many of the programs, supplies or additional teachers that Title 1 schools have benefited from. Much of the money we do get comes directly from fundraising efforts, supported by our parents, or directly out of teacher's pockets. A difficult task that we face is funding the special programs that we want to implement in our school.
I felt that there was a need to build community throughout the school. That is why we decided to implement the Book of the Month literacy initiative this school year at P.S. 236. With this program a book will be chosen each month and distributed to every class PreK- Grade 5. The books chosen spark up quality class discussions, which lead to writing activities. They may teach a lesson, follow a theme or focus on a particular genre. Through the Book of the month literacy initiative every member of our school community adults and children share common topics to converse about. Positive interactions will be established.
For the month of April, I intend on using the book, “Song of the Water Boatman and other Pond Poems”, written by Joyce Sidman. This title covers two important themes that are in line with the month of April. April is poetry month and Earth day also falls in April. What book would be more perfect than this 2006 Caldecott Honor Book? Please help make this possible for P.S.236. Our students will benefit tremendously. Through the lessons taught using “Song of the Water Boatman and other Pond Poems” students and staff would be immersed in poetry dealing with respect for nature. Thank you for your time and consideration.
